Petcurean Animal Food from Canada
There
are several ways that dry food can be made including
baked, pelleted, or extruded. In Petcurean
Animal Food, all
products are extruded except for
the health bars, which are baked.
The manufacturing of pet food
begins with assembling the raw
materials, but before any of
these ingredients are used, they are scanned using NIR for total ingredient analysis.
The
raw materials are ground to the correct particle size. The
grinding will increase the
availability of nutrients, as well
as improve the ease in which they
are processed. Petcurean Animal
food uses only an ultra fine
grind.
Proper
mixing of all the ingredients is very important to
create a consistent product. If
the mix is not thoroughly
blended, the essential nutrients
could be excessive or absent
in individual pieces of the
finished product. A blender is used
to mix batches, and only the dry
ingredients are included until the next step can be completed.
The
extrusion process is very similar to the process of bread
making: mixing, kneading,
proofing (rising), shaping, rising
again, and slicing. The
preconditioner then very accurately, measures the amount of
the
dry mix and blends it with the
measured “wet” ingredients portion, then moves it to the extruder, where
it is slow cooked, moves through the shaper
and is cut.
The
kibble is then cooled, and enrobed where fats and oils are
sprayed onto the outside.
The kibble is then ready to
be bagged.
